Paper Making Class
Paper Making Class
October 25th from 10 am
$70 per person
Learn to make handmade paper, add flowers both fresh and dried, raw cotton and colours to make beautiful paper. Learn to prepare your pulp, to make Plantable Papers, add seeds, and emboss wet papers. We will discuss handmade paper for painting and calligraphy, and hot press paper on the day.
Time of workshop: 2 hours
About the teacher:
Susan is a lover of all things paper and founder of Born In Paper. It is fair to say Susan’s obsession with the beautiful textures, colours, and even the smell of printing and paper, has quite literally been ingrained in her since birth. Growing up in a family printing business in Byron Bay meant hands-on with everything. Binding notepads, collating, sorting lead type or dusting gold on wedding stationery.
For years, Susan was taking office waste from her workplace and recycling it into handmade papers. Now, Susan shares her passion with her Born In Paper workshops, creates large wall art and sculptured light-filled paper bowls. If you love handmade papers, and creating something new, you will love this workshop.

🐍 Reptile House Grand Opening!
On Tuesday the 21st of October we’re going to be celebrating our grand opening on International Reptile Awareness Day!
We officially unveil our brand-new, state-of-the-art Reptile House — a vibrant new precinct celebrating Australia’s incredible scaly and slimy wildlife.
This thoughtfully designed space provides a fresh start for our resident reptiles, amphibians and insects, featuring 28 new enclosures with bioactive environments and innovative co-housing arrangements that put animal wellbeing first. Visitors will discover an amazing diversity of species — from local Northern Rivers natives to creatures found across Australia — all housed in habitats that mimic the natural world.
More than just an exhibit, the Reptile House is an educational hub, giving guests a hands-on opportunity to learn about often misunderstood species, their roles in healthy ecosystems, and how we can all help protect them.
A Landmark in the Making
One of the centrepiece features is “Arthur,” a 5-metre Red-Bellied Black Snake sculpture created by Natureworks. The Reptile House shall bea stunning collaboration between artists, builders, and the local community, including Cat Gerke Artist and Dane from Rolling Stone Projects. After 5 years teaching in North Queensland and 4 years working as a graphic designer in Adelaide, South Australia, she moved to Byron Bay, Northern NSW in 1998 and was introduced to silk as a medium.

Book Week
BOOK WEEK AT THE SANCTUARY
16–23 August
There’s magic in the air (and in the trees) as we celebrate Book Week here at the Sanctuary! From the 16th to the 23rd of August, join us for a week dedicated to stories, wildlife and wonder.
We’re kicking off in the most exciting way — with a special Meet the Author and Book Signing on Sunday 16th August featuring An Antechinus in the Attic by local author Viranne Mischon. Come along for a live reading and get your copy signed while surrounded by the very creatures that inspired the tale.
Throughout the week, guests are invited to browse our growing collection of nature-inspired reads — from children's storybooks and field guides to Australian wildlife tales for all ages. It’s the perfect chance to grab a book about your favourite animal, grab a warm beverage from our café, snuggle up, and let the sanctuary’s peaceful bushland bring the stories to life!
You can also Book an Adventure this Book Week!
Embracing the theme for Book Week this year we're delighted to bring the enchantment of wildlife to your school's doorstep. You can reserve a one-hour slot for an extraordinary encounter with one of our wildlife Keepers. The keepers will read a captivating wildlife story, but that's not all - they'll be accompanied by none other than some Australian reptiles!
Students will learn the basics of Snake Safety and some of the incredible adaptive skills possessed by reptiles and why we must take care of them.
Bring the family, meet the animals, and discover something new on the page — it’s a celebration of reading with a wild twist. 📚🐾
